Do you ever feel like you are not getting the most out of your schooling? I was feeling the same way. It didn’t feel as if I was meeting the people I needed to meet or learning all the things I wanted to learn. Then I joined the AIS Club, which is the Association for Information Systems. Joining this club has changed my whole outlook on school. Not only is it a great networking tool but also an opportunity to learn more of your desired skills than what you can get in a classroom.
I can’t think of a better way to meet some of the other students you are going through school with. I have found that I do better in classes when I have a familiar face in there with me. This is not merely for the social aspect of having a friend with you but also to be able to build a study group and help each other really grasp the concepts that are being taught. Clubs are also an incredible opportunity to meet the people who could quite possibly be your employers one day. Even if you do not get a job directly from one of these people, they will teach you the skills and techniques that will help you to get a job somewhere else.
Often times I wonder why I am in a particular class, when it doesn’t really seem pertinent to the field of work I am trying to go into. While these courses are probably teaching useful principles, I frequently find myself wishing I were somewhere else learning things more specific to my major. Joining a club is the perfect way for you to learn some of those things that you won’t get from your classes. This is a place to have professionals come and give you some hands-on experience.
I encourage everybody to find a club that is within his/her field of study and participate in the events that it holds as much as possible. Doing so will get you more friends, more training, and more employment opportunities. There are so many of these clubs for us to take advantage of, and it would be a shame to have these great opportunities pass us by.
